The temple premises comprise of several buildings and towers dedicated to the worship and beliefs of Zen Buddhism and have been added on at various times in history. The earliest building on the premises is the Mahavira hall believed to have been built around 401 during the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Measuring 116’ x 81.36’ it sits on a high platform and is guarded by a bell tower and a drum tower. Inside are statues of the seated Buddha. The Sixth Ancestor Hall, a seven storey twenty five foot pagoda, was built during the Northern Song Dynasty to honor the master Huineng whose statue is found inside. Each level of this pagoda houses eight shrines of the Buddha. Behind the hall is a bodhi tree where the hair that was cut from Huineng during his novitiate is said to have been buried. Other buildings in the complex include the Sakyamuni hall, the Samgarama hall and the 380 year old King of Heaven hall. The two iron towers in the premises, the East and West Towers dated to the 10th century, are said to be the oldest such towers in China. The four upper floors of the west tower have collapsed while the east tower remains intact and is seven stories high. About 1,000 high relief statues of the Buddha have been carved on the exterior of the towers. It is believed that originally the towers were gilded. Other relics worthy of note is the mushroom shaped Dharani pillar made of bluestone in 826 and engraved with the Mahakaruna Dharani Sutra. Zen Buddhism is wide spread and still practiced with devotion in China.
