Opening up into the scenic sights of Weligama Bay, the south coast of Weligama is a surfer’s paradise, for both the experienced and the inexperienced. It’s a good part of Sri Lanka to be in, regardless of your skill at the surf, and there are many cosy spots that are tucked away in Weligama Bay, both for relaxing and for riding a wave or two. Here’s your guide to the Sri Lankan surfing scene on the south coast!
At A Glance
There’s not much to say to sum it up – The Weligama surf is some of the best spots for both beginners and intermediates, and it’s got great surf schools for those who want to get started. The bad side is, pollution can sometimes be an issue with the rain and frequent visitors – and it is frequent, as the busy nature of a holiday destination might mean you won’t have as much space as you’d like.
Getting to Weligama
Travelling out of Colombo, you can roughly say it’s the midpoint between Galle and Matara – perfectly situated between two large commercial hubs. The town itself is located amid the bay and has several unique offerings for those in search of a beach villa in Weligama which provides easy access to the shore and caters to diverse interests. An option like Parangi Weligama Bay, for instance, is a great property to be based at during your surf vacation on the south coast.
Guide to Surf Spots
Other than Weligama Bay itself, there’s also Mirissa, Hiriketiya, and Midigama, much smaller places but no less entertaining. With many options to suit all skill ranges, you can have boatloads of fun learning and sharpening your skills – while also making a memory or two!
When to Go Surfing
There are two main seasons on the surf scale in Sri Lanka – the monsoon season, and the dry season. For Weligama and its surrounding areas, the dry season works best – with big breaks for experienced surfers and smaller breaks for novices. The monsoon season is when everyone moves over to Arugam Bay, although a few waves can be caught here and there.
