Xian is a historical city in china, with a history of more than 3000 years. It’s one out of the four great ancient capital of China. The city is well known as the eastern termination point of the Silk Road and for being home to the terracotta army.
The Xian city wall was largely extended by the first emperor of the Ming Dynasty ZhuYuanzhang ,, when he captured the city then named Huizhou. The wall was already in place during the Tang Dynasty (earlier), only not to this scale. The extension saw the wall being built in to a 12 meter high fortification, which was 15 meters wide at the bottom and 12 meters thick at the top. 98 ramparts were extended from the main wall from which soldiers would protect the city against the enemy.
Complicated gate structures have been installed for protection. Four gates named as Changle , Anding , ‘Yongning’ were put up in the 4 directions of the city . Out of which the Yongning is the closest to the city’s bell tower and is the most beautifully decorated one. It’s a lovely walk from the city center, and great location for bicycle rides. Although the city wall has been restored thrice, the original outlook of the wall has remained unchanged. The visiting hours are usually from eight in the morning to eight in the evening.
Xian is a gorgeous city, with plenty of attractions to visit. With so much history to mingle with and so many historical monuments to admire, it feels a little like from an old Chinese tale.
