The landlocked Sichuan Province is fast moving into technology and industrialization, but has its roots firmly in place. The cuisine, language, beliefs and heroes the people worship are very much intact and remain unforgotten. The Wu Hou Ci Temple is one such site constructed and dedicated to Zhuge Liang a prominent strategist and military personnel during the Shu regime. The Emperor Liu Bei is also featured within the same premises.
The temple is located in the Southern part of Chegdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. Its architecture and design stand out from the other buildings in the area and the evergreen trees that grow along the pathways make the premises the cynosure of all eyes that pass by. The temple grounds look almost like an extension of the symbolic Nanjiao Park that lies along its border.
Though the heroics of these two warriors were recorded around 200AD, the actual temple was constructed during the Qing Dynasty in the year 1672. The temple per se is split into five integral parts; the Gate, the Second Gate, the Corridor, the Hall of Liu Bei and the Wuhou Temple (Zhuge Liang’s Hall). The wooden panels, the elegant but sophisticated style and the well maintained interiors are a pleasant sight.
Within the chambers there are clay sculptures of Zhuge Liang, Liu Bei and all his ministers and other noblemen. However, the most treasured items are the inscribed stone tablets carrying wholesome details of Chinese history. The poems and essays carved on those rocks are well known among the local communities out of which the most important is considered to be the Tablet of Triple Success carved by one of China’s most renowned calligraphers throughout history; Pei Du. The literary value and craftsmanship are still appreciated and well received by people from all walks of life.
