Zanzibar, a captivating archipelago located off the eastern coast of Tanzania in East Africa, beckons travellers with its intoxicating blend of rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking natural beauty. Renowned for its pristine white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and coral reefs teeming with marine life, Zanzibar is a paradise for sun-seekers and water enthusiasts.
Stone Town
A UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, the first impression of Stone Town is imposing and overwhelming. However, after warming up to it, the narrow and winding alleyways become steeped in the scents of delectable street food, like chapatis, samosa, and more – while the sights of the local people enjoying board games on the street paint a vivid picture of what daily life might be like here.
Forodhani Night Market
After exploring the historic districts of Stone Town, a visit to Forodhani Gardens for the evening market is a must. As the sun sets, this seemingly ordinary promenade undergoes a remarkable transformation. Food stalls spring to life, catering to both locals and tourists. It’s an ideal spot for socializing while relishing local cuisine, offering a delightful sensory experience. The menu boasts a diverse range of dishes, from traditional Zanzibari pizza to falafels, seafood skewers, and coconut bread.
Prison Island
Named back in 1890, the Prison Island was constructed initially to hold several slaves – but plans changed and it was instead used as a quarantine zone for victims of Yellow Fever. Today, it remains a sanctuary of sorts for giant turtles brought from Seychelles some time back, and some of these creatures are over 100 years old. If you’re looking for things to do in Zanzibar, you can’t really go wrong with a visit to this mysterious and historic place.
Jozani Resort
Although Zanzibar is traditionally known for its near-immaculate beaches, you’ll want to make an exception for the Jozani Resort. Zanzibar’s only national park, it is host to a varied set of endangered species, such as the unique Red Colobus Monkey – which preservationists have been trying to maintain and protect for several years now. You can also find many other beautiful creatures here, especially on a tour which can be set up by your local accommodation partner such as The Residence Zanzibar.
