The great city of London is steeped in history, and is the seat of the British Empire. It is also one of the most popular tourism destinations in the world, offering a wide range of luxury accommodation such as the Berjaya Eden Park London Hotel which is one of many hotels in Bayswater London.
One of the most historic locations you can visit in London is the Regal Street Cinema which is widely hailed as the ‘birthplace of British cinema’. It was built in 1848 and was housed in what is now the University of Westminster. During this time it was used as a theatre to showcase plays. In 1896, the first film in British history was played here, a short film by the Lumiere Brothers.
In 1951, another cinematic first occurred in the cinema, when it showcased the film ‘La Vie Commence Demain’, which was given an X-rating due to its brutal depiction of warfare. This made the Regent Street Cinema not only the first establishment to showcase a motion picture in the United Kingdom, but also the first to showcase an X-rated motion picture as well.
After eighty-four years of operation, the cinema was closed down in 1980 and remained so for thirty-five years before being re-opened in 2015. Now the cinema is a state-of-the-art affair, and features some of the latest items associated with cinema, including the ability to showcase films in the latest 4K format.
The present-day Regent Street Cinema shows everything from the latest premiers to experimental cinema to documentaries and repertory screenings. If you ever find yourself in the area, it would be a shame not to visit the birthplace of British cinema. Given the enormous variety of entertainment featured within the Regent Street Cinema, you’re bound to find something that will suit your fancy.
