Langkawi, the Malaysian archipelago with 99 islands, is surrounded by the Andaman Sea. With a mix of paddy fields, jungle-covered hills, and the far-reaching shorelines that you’ll see on almost every island in the area. Encompassed in a feeling purely tropical, the swaying trees and the crashing of the waves are perfect examples of the atmosphere in that you’ll find yourself immersed. It’s also renowned as a great place for diving and is a place that everyone keeps revisiting.
The Islands
As there are around one hundred islands to visit in Langkawi, it’s pretty much a guarantee that you’ll be spoiled for choice. Luckily, not all islands were built equal. Some islands are large and developed enough to hold fine resorts, such as the great Pantai Cenang beach resort, and the highly renowned Pelangi Beach Resort & Spa. In equal measure, there are islands which have barely been touched, perfect for exploring places purely composed of natural splendour.
The Cuisine
Many dishes in Langkawi are definitely inspired by the mainland, but the main difference is the abundance of fresh seafood. There are also plenty of unique herbs and spices to diverge its tastes and make it stand out in the world. With plenty of family-owned restaurants, as well as established, famous places, the dining scene in Langkawi is well-known and liked.
The Nightlife
After taking in a great meal for dinner, either at a restaurant or your choice place for accommodation, there are a few things you can do that can only be done at night. The night markets at Pantai Cenang are a great choice for exploration, rife with souvenirs and unique goods, and the open-air bars on Kuah or Pantai Kok islands are also excellent for a nightcap before you turn in. If none of that interests you, it’s always nice to take a stroll on the beach once the sun goes down.
The Excursions
Of course, Langkawi isn’t just about natural beauty or fine establishments. There are great things to see – such as the Dataran Lang – Eagle Square – which features a massive statue of an Eagle about to take flight. Other interesting attractions include the Langkawi Cable Car, which takes you on a 15-minute journey up to Gunung Machinchang, a 700-metre tall mountain with souvenirs and a cool breeze at the top. There is also the Pulau Payar Marine Park, which has many tour groups complete with snorkelling equipment for the avid water people. Never say Langkawi is just for the beaches and resorts!
