Nicknamed the ‘City of 100 Beaches’, Whangarei is the northernmost town in New Zealand and functions as the regional capital of the Northland Region. Holidaymakers making their way to the area will be offered a glimpse into how life was in the olden days. Those with a passion for history would revel in such conditions as Whangarei dates back to 950 AD and is filled with interesting tales that will be hard to forget. It is stated that the Polynesian explorer Kupe was the first person who came across the headlands of Whangarei Harbour while returning having discovered ‘Aotearoa’ or New Zealand itself. This was followed by members of the Ngapuhi Tribe settling in the area which also marked the beginning of many other Maori tribes arriving in large numbers after 1000 AD.
However it was not until the latter half of the 19th century when Whangarei was transformed into becoming the most urbanised section in Northland. Agriculture played a major part in sustaining the town while shipping was the main form of transport until such time as the North Auckland railway line was extended to reach the town in 1925.
