The Southern seas of Sri Lanka display a seemingly deathly calm from December to April. The waters are lukewarm as the sun has lightly brushed upon its surface in the early hours of the morn. It’s 7 a.m and you set off on an expertly handled boat. Your destination is the Weligama Bay where in 2007, it was discovered that whales and dolphins of different kinds migrate through the waters, much to the delight of Sri Lankans and tourists. Today, being a part of the spectacle created by whales and dolphins is tremendously popular. It is a three to five hour trip. The excitement builds up as you venture further and further into the ocean with a boat filled with enthusiasts much like you. Therefore it goes without saying that whale and dolphin watching tops the list of things to do in Galle, Sri Lanka. Another spot that is full of activity is Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort an ideal base from which to head off on your adventures.
Leaping and twirling towards your boat are the much-loved dolphins. Schools of dolphins venture close to your boat in a friendly rush. Their calves swim in close proximity to the adults, thus creating a synchronized dance much like an award- winning water ballet performance. If you look close enough you will notice that each dolphin is unique. You guessed right, you would find different species of dolphins in these warm waters. Here are a few you could keep in mind: the spinner dolphin, the common dolphin, the bottle-nosed dolphin, Risso’s dolphins and striped dolphins.
Intermittently, you would also notice a significant disturbance in the waters. Grand beings, the whales, surface and slyly conceal themselves in the comforting waters. Be on the lookout for the sperm whale, the dwarf sperm whale, the melon-headed whale and last but not least the blue whale.
Don’t be disheartened if you don’t witness them all, it’s just comforting to know that they are peacefully journeying through these waters.
