Are you waterfall hunting in Sri Lanka? The island has a number of breathtaking waterfalls, especially in Nuwera Eliya and Bandarawela areas. Here are some quick tips before setting out on your excursion.
Safety
Safety is crucial when you’re looking for waterfalls. The stones and surface can be slippery and wet and if you’re not too careful, you could easily hurt yourself. Also, be cautious of deep well areas and rapid strong currents closer to the base of the falls.
Season
It is strictly advised that visiting waterfalls during the monsoon season should be avoided at all costs! This is because the constant rains will create stronger currents in the falls and if the gates of a dam in the area were to open, it could be very dangerous!
Popular falls
Some of the most iconic waterfalls are Ravana Falls, Diyaluma Falls and Dunhinda Falls. These main falls are great for sightseeing and serve as some of the best places to visit in Bandarawela. Do note that it is not safe to swim here.
Accommodation
As there are a number of varied accommodation options to stay at, from Airbnb to places such as Bandarawela Hotel, check which are the closest waterfalls that are safe for swimming.
