Surfing enthusiasts have plenty of good options to choose from; coastal towns like Hikkaduwa and Weligama, offer the best surf waves south-west of the country, with waves reaching up to 2 – 6 feet in height. These areas are more populated due to rapid development, but if you find you’re own spot on the beach, its definitely a much try. Pro surfers and beginners will enjoy the world class surf breaks of Arugam Bay on the east coast. While it’s regarded as one of the top 10 surf destinations in the world, due to its location, it’s not as crowded as places like Hikkaduwa.
Snorkelling and diving are also popular, with several reefs located around the island. Some of the best are off towns such as Hikkauwa, Unawatuna and Trincomalee. Kite surfing is another water sport that has grown in popularity. The best place for this is Kalpitiya, located north of Colombo, its a peninsula bordered by the Indian Ocean on one side and a lagoon on the other. Famous as a whale/dolphin watching spot, it also offers excellent weather conditions for kite surfing. For less extreme sports, towns like Bentota and Koggala offer Jet Skiing, Boogie boarding, and water safaris along the lagoons, plus, all these areas provide great accommodation options.
