Wat Saket is a man-made hill which is topped by a chedi, stupa or temple which glistens in gold. This temple is also known as the Golden Mount, or ‘Phu Khao Thong’. The temple grounds is home to mature trees as also to the main chapel of the temple, ordination hall and the library which are classic Buddhist structures.
The temple holds an annual fair which falls during the month of November. This draws crowds who wish to worship at this sacred pilgrimage site, where the Golden Mount is a popular landmark amidst the temple complex. Encircling the chedi are steps which are required to be ascended if you wish to reach the tip of the stupa.
Some may not quite like the sight which meets the eye at the base of the Golden Mount, which is a cemetery overgrown with vines and trees. Though eerie, it gives you a peek into the history of the place where it used to be a crematorium in the 18th century. A wall of bells greets you at the top of the stupa and transports you into another era with its old world charm.
