If you’re touring through Thailand and exploring all the amazing temples the country has to offer, you can’t miss out on the Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong. Here’s a closer look at the wonderful attraction found in Chiang Rai.
The History
According to the Yonok Chronicle, the temple was originally founded all the way back in 940. The temple was eventually swallowed up by the forest until the area was cleared by King Magrai who wished to establish a city in Chiang Rai – The Wat Thai Doi was subsequently restored.
A Place of Reverence
The temple is one of the most sacred sites you’ll find in Chiang Rai, and it was believed to have been the home of spirits once. Nowadays, spirit houses happily coexist here with Buddhist shrines and pilgrims visit the location from all over the country.
The Highlights
The magnificent golden pagoda can be found right at the centre of the temple and bears the influence of Bhu-kam and Lanna designs. If you’re staying at a boutique hotel Chiang Rai has on offer – say, for instance, the Hotel Sooknirund – it’s worth visiting the temple just to see the pagoda.
Timeless Relics
When you’re exploring near the pagoda, you’ll notice a number of ancient Buddhist relics that are said to have belonged to the Buddha himself. These were first acquired by Prince Pangkaraj who divided the relics between multiple temples – one of which was the Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong.
