There are several interpretations of how Langkawi got its name. One version says Langkawi means reddish brown eagle in colloquial Malay. Eagle is Helang in Malay and Kawi means red stone (stone used to chalk mark goods.)This interpretation was the catalyst for the landmark sculpture of the Eagle as the symbol of Langkawi in Daturan Lang (Eagle Square) in Kuah. It is also believed that Langkawi is also the same as Lanka or Lankapuri mentioned in Old Indian sources and related to Langkasuka to be thought by some to be linked to Kedah. Some say that Langkawi means many beautiful islands for in Sanskrit Langka means beautiful and Wi many.
Langkawi has chequered history with foreign control at various times including Japanese, Thai and British. Thai influence is very much in evidence in Langkawi culture and cuisine.
