You have no doubt seen a Buddhist monk in Golden robes, at some point in your life or at least a picture. However how often do you see a demised monk in robes? Well that is exactly what you will see when you visit Wat Khunaram. Monk Loung Pordaeng died in a meditative position in 1973 and as if to signify what Buddhism preaches of uncertainty in everything the body of the monk still sits in the premise remarkably showing little sign of decay.
Although some find it spooky, it falls in line with Buddhist preaching where they look at life as an opportunity to be reborn in a far better place. They accept death as a natural order of life. Although there are plenty of other mummified monks in Thailand, monk Loung Pordaeng is among the most highly respected.
Born to a prominent family in 1894 within a closely knit community he took robes at the age of 20 only to disrobe after two years. Upon completing his duties to the six children he fathered he once again took robes once again. Having completed a session of deep meditation within the Tham Yai he lived in Koh Samui as a greatly respected Buddhist Abbot.
Although Wat Khunaram owes its popularity to the Mummified Monk, it’s a great place to mingle with locals and buy a few Buddhist artifacts. Entrance to the premise is free and visitors are allowed during day light hours every day of the year. Stay at a beautiful Samui hotel as you explore the Wat Khunaram and other major attractions in the area.
