Offering insights into Sri Lanka’s rich cultural and religious heritage, the Kande Viharaya is a distinctive Buddhist temple that’s well worth a visit when on the island.
Temple Location
The temple is close to the town of Aluthgama in the Kalutara District. It’s only around 30 minutes from Kalutara town, while Colombo, the commercial capital, is a little over a 1.5-hour drive away. It’s also within easy reach of Anantara Kalutara Resort, amongst the ‘Safe and Secure’ Level 1 hotels in Kalutara for foreign travellers.
Name & History
The name of the temple, “Kande Viharaya”, signifies its location; it translates to “mountain temple” and this sacred site does indeed sit atop a hill. The original temple dates to the 18th century with Venerable Karapagala Dewamitta Thero being credited as the founder and today, it’s an Archaeological Protected Monument.
