History
The history of Shinjuku Gyoen dates back to Edo Period from 1603 to 1867 and it was initially founded as a feudal lord’s Tokyo residence. Later the garden was passed over to the Imperial Family in the early 1900’s. It was used by the imperials for recreational activities and entertaining guests until it was rebuilt and reopened as a public park in 1949.
What to find
Shinjuku Gyoen consists of three differently themed gardens; a symmetrically manicured French formal garden, English landscape garden and an old-style Japanese garden. The park is considered to have over 20,000 trees.
How to get there
There are three entrances for visitors, Shinjuku Gate being the main one is easily accessible from JR Shinjuku Station. Okido Gate, which is in the opposite side of Japanese garden, is situated close to Shinjuku Gyoenmae Station exit number two. And finally the Sendagaya Gate is located near the JR Sendagaya Station.
