The somewhat small tropical wonderland of Sri Lanka contains many a breathtaking wildlife reserves, but that will always stand a cut above the rest, especially when it comes to popularity in the Udawalawe National park.
Udawalawe National Park
The most noteworthy quality of the park is the ease in which anyone can spot an elephant within the wildlife reserve mainly due to the fact that it is located in an area consisting of mostly dry savannah instead of the dense rainforest Sri Lanka is more famous for. This lack of dense vegetation makes it incredibly easy to spot the various creatures that inhabit the wildlife reserve.
Location
Udawalawe is home to the elephants and water birds of Sri Lanka. Located within the inland provinces of the country the park is 165kms from Colombo. The park consisting of 30,821sqkms of land was set up in 1972 with the establishment of the Udawalawe Reservoir.
Highlights
The range of species within the park is immense, both in terms of variety and number. On any given day, a visitor will be able to glimpse herds of wild buffaloes, sambar deer and leopards. There are many Sri Lanka hotels located in close proximity to the park. If you’re planning to visit the legendary Udawalawe National Park, base yourself in an accommodation offered by Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts which gives easy access to the park.
