Appreciate marvellous views of nature’s gifts to mankind as you pay a visit to Lesotho, the high-altitude kingdom in South Africa. Maletsunyane Falls is one such wonder with cascading waters that are beloved and visited by many.
About the Falls
This hidden gem in Lesotho is a 2.5-hour ride away from Avani Lesotho Hotel & Casino and therefore is considered easily reachable from most hotels in Lesotho. This majestic downpour of water stands at 192 metres and is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after sights in Lesotho. The waterfall is located only 35 minutes away (11.5 km) from a village named Semonkong.
Reaching Maletsunyane
Tourists are advised to follow the A5 route to reach Semonkong or the Maletsunyane Falls, which then connect to the A4 route (Quthing -Qachas Nek). The trip up to the falls is nothing short of excitement as the landscapes alongside the road offer spectacular views to travellers. The road is tricky and steep and therefore, riding on a bicycle or travelling in a small car with heavy luggage may be proven challenging.
The Town
The neighbouring town, Semonkong is the closest to the Maletsunyane Falls and is home to almost 8,000 people. The town was established back in the year 1880 as a refuge for Basotho and therefore revolved around a historical fable of the Gun War. This small highland’s title translates into “Place of Smoke”, which has been named after the cloud of spray of the Maletsunyane Falls.
At the Maletsunyane Falls
This tallest single-drop waterfall in South Africa is formed on the Maletsunyane River, a tributary of the Senqu River (Orange River) of South Africa. It then falls over the edge of a prehistoric basalt which dates back to the Triassic – Jurassic age. At the point where the A5 road reaches its highest point, a small parking spot will come into view for visitors to the waterfall.
