One of the prime attractions in Macau is the ruins of the St. Paul’s church. The ruins stand next to the famous Mount fortress and the Macau Museum. The only remains of this great church are the front facade and the grand stone stairs. The church was first constructed in 1580 and then the church caught fire in 1595 and 1601. The church was rebuilt in 1637 after which the church became the largest Catholic Church in East Asia at the time. One of the largest typhoons that hit Macau in 1835 destroyed the church once again and all that remained became history. According to available historic material it is believed the church was built using white stones and had a grand roof with three lavishly decorated halls. The facade has classic oriental characteristics, from bottom to the top the structure is made up of five tiers. The work that went into this great religious place of worship is to date appreciated. Most of the work involved high skilled delicate craft.
The ruins of the church were restored in 1990 and 1995 along the construction of the museum of sacred art and crypt. Which includes exhibits of religious art works painting and statues.
Some of the other places of interest in the close proximity include Monte fort , one of the prominent forts in Macau.
