Being just another old smelly canal in the past, Bastian Street in Pettah has come a long way and transformed into a place where you’ll find locals having a stroll while hitting the “pola” or market. Here are a few interesting facts to know.
The horror of the past
It was not long ago when the place now known as the floating market in Colombo was a hot spot for all sorts of shady characters. There were abandoned buildings and stagnant canal waters which gave the place an unapproachable air to it. Although this is true, you couldn’t even imagine this picture when you see the place now!
Progress in Pettah
In recent years Colombo has been undergoing some impressive development and Pettah, especially Bastian Road. The canal has been thoroughly cleaned widened. The road has been neatly paved and of course, the wooden-floored bridge that spreads on the water making way for the floating market.
The stalls
On the bridge are a few red-roofed huts that shelter over 90 stalls inside. Initially, vendors who had taken work elsewhere during construction filled the place. However, some could not remain as they had to pay rent. For others, however, those who remain, find it a peaceful spot to earn their money.
Note before your visit
