The Pearl of the Indian Ocean, sunny and tropical, is a popular holiday destination. Beach hotels in Sri Lanka are booked year round, with people looking to catch some rays by the water. Negombo is an up and coming seaside town that is conveniently located in close proximity to Bandaranaike International Airport. It is very popular for its fresh seafood and is also home to a handful of quirky restaurants and shops. There is a selection of hotels and resorts, like Amagi Lagoon Resorts & Spa of the Amagi Hotels group.
The town of Negombo was once held by Portuguese colonists who capitalised on the cinnamon and other spices that grew wild in the nearby jungles. The lucrative trade was soon taken over by Dutch colonists. It was only later on that Negombo became the key fishing port it is today.
Some fishermen choose to fish in the Negombo Lagoon, which is a haven for lobsters, crabs and prawns; while others head out to sea. A visitor to Negombo beach at dawn will be treated to a rewarding sight. The colourful fishing boats bob their way across the waves to land after a long night of fishing. Thereafter the fish market is open for business, every day other than Sunday. A lively and smelly session of bartering, haggling, buying and selling ensues with the highest bidder walking away with the goods. If you cross the lagoon bridge you will come across a second fish market, where the larger boats come ashore. The fishermen and their families continue to work throughout the day mending nets, cleaning out their boats and preparing for the next night on the water. Much of the daily catch is sold to restaurants in the area where one can sample the fresh seafood.
