Located in the town of Tangalle, the rock is also known as “little Sigiriya” and is about 21 km north of the southern city in Sri Lanka. Visitors to the temple would need to climb an ancient staircase of about 533 steps that will lead them to natural caves, unique wall paintings and Buddha statues before reaching the summit. When travelling from Tangalle, the journey would usually take about 25 minutes before you find yourself at this magnificent rock.
The Mulkirigala Rock Temple rises from the ground and stands at a height of 200 metres amongst the thick palm forest landscapes. The complex features a series of rock temples that were carved out of rock outcrop around the 2nd century B.C. The Buddhist temple at the summit of the rock features a display of antique murals and paintings.
The first terrace of the rock temple holds a sacred Bo tree and twin cave temples which are known as the Paduma Rahat Viharaya. The statues in this section have two 14m statues of Lord Buddha in the state of Parinirvana. There are also images of Hindu Gods such as God Vishnu and God Kataragama. The second terrace is known as Madamaluwa or middle courtyard, where the Madamaluwa Viharaya is situated. The shrines at the summit of the rock are popular with worshippers, as they are known to grant the devotees with what they ask for. The third terrace features the main temple known as Raja Maha Viharaya which has a 15m long statue of Buddha. Keep walking till you reach the beautiful summit of the rock!
