Everybody knows Goa is the ideal beach hangout spot in India, but what you might not know is the historic place you must visit when in Goa.
The Fort
If you want a glimpse at what the architecture of the Portuguese military was like, you must visit Fort Aguada. The fort walls are as high as 5 metres in the taller spots and the walls themselves are about 1 to 2 metres thick. Over the years, these walls have faced and stood strong in front of the fiercest storms and thrashing waves.
History
Fort Aguada was built as a monument to the skilful engineering construction capabilities of the Portuguese. Many luxury hotels in Goa have the influence of this architecture too and are a beauty to look at. The Fort was built for 3 years and the construction ended in 1612.
Location
If you are put up at a place near Vasco de Gama or Majorda the likes of Alila Diwa Goa, then the Fort is close to 2 hours away, even 1.5 hours if the roads are free of traffic.
When to go
The Fort is open to visitors every day of the week, and opens at 9.30am and stays so until 6.00pm. If you are planning on dedicating a day to visiting this historic site, make sure the weather forecast doesn’t warn you of rains and pack a picnic to go!
