Galle is a key coastal city in Down South, Sri Lanka where there are plenty of cultural, religious and colonial era highlights and other fun things to see. If you are staying at one of the Galle hotels in the city such as Jetwing Lighthouse or just visiting the historic city on a day tour on your own, there are plenty of adventures to be enjoyed.
Galle is widely renowned for the Galle Dutch Fort which is its key landmark and main feature. The Galle Fort sets a unique record as the best preserved sea fort in the whole of South Asia. It is a living heritage site with a magnificent blend of architecture, cobbled-stone streets and pavements, ancient beautifully designed churches and colonial buildings with people living inside the fort having a totally unique lifestyle in contrast to the outside world from the walls. Built by the Portuguese the fort itself can take an entire day with all the awe-inspiring attractions that are in store to be explored. The old world charm that is exuberated within its ramparts and stonewalls spreads over a gigantic 36 hectare peninsula with stunning buildings that still remain. The narrow streets are coloured with Dutch colonial villas. There are a few museums and some antique shops that you can visit displaying colonial era items used by both the locals and the colonial rulers at different periods. The Galle Lighthouse is located within the Dutch Fort.
The Galle International Cricket Stadium is located just outside the Dutch Fort which you can visit where you would see future Sri Lankan cricket heroes practising in the nets on a side. There is a large playing field next to the fort walls where you would find hundreds of school kids playing. A few kilometres from Galle town you will find the lovely tourist haven, Unawatuna Beach. This golden sandy beach area is excellent for surfing, sunbathing and water sports with plenty of tourist inns and restaurants dotted across the shore.
