Colombo has many attractions but one that consistently brings in massive crowds is Viharamahadevi Park which is the city’s most popular green space.
Inception
The park was initially called “Victoria Park” and was built by during the time of British rule by Charles Henry De Soysa, and was donated to the city. It was named in honour of Queen Victoria. During the Second World War, the park was occupied by the British military as well as the Australian 17th Division.
Cricket
Between 1927 and 1995 there was a large cricket-ground within the park that was utilised for notable first-class matches. The Ceylonese team faced many notable rivals at this ground, including a touring team from Britain.
Features
The park has many interesting attributes that cater to a whole range of visitors. These include a massive Buddha statue, various cycling/jogging tracks, children’s play areas, and vendors selling everything from ice-cream to street food to toys. Open-Air Stadium
The park’s most notable feature is the large open-air stadium, which is famous for bringing down renowned musical acts. Many notable bands and musicians from within the country and the international scene have performed at this stadium, with examples like As I Lay Dying, Demonic Resurrection and Stigmata.
