Iconic Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka’s greatest historical treasures. The magnificent fortress and its region are part of the cultural triangle and filled with many archaeological sites and discoveries.
Sigiriya Rock Fortress
This spectacular monolith dates back millions of years and was made a protective fortress by King Kashyapa in 447-495 CE. At the summit, you will find many palace ruins, including the throne and a large pool. It is still a mystery how the hydraulic systems defied gravity to transport water up the massive rock. If you are looking for five-star hotels in Sigiriya, the likes of Water Garden Sigiriya are among the options available.
Palace grounds
The palace grounds are almost a separate attraction as there is much to explore. There are several natural rock-hewn ponds, delightful water gardens, plus caves to explore once you conquer the massive monolith.
Pidurangala
Another rock close to Sigiriya is Pidurangala offering great views of Sigiriya from its summit. The entrance to the rock is via an ancient temple. It is believed, that King Kashyapa used to come to this location to pay his respects to the Buddha. Sunrise and sunsets are spectacular atop Prdurangala.
Dambulla Cave Temple
A 20-minute drive away from Sigiriya is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Dambulla Cave Temple. The whole temple complex is built upon a rock over 160 meters in height, and towers over the surrounding region. Inside these caves, you will find frescoes and statues of the Buddha, and stories detailing his past lives and those of his disciples.
