Often clouded with deep, thick mists, covered with neatly grown tea estates and glorious lush green throughout the hill country of Sri Lanka is a tropical wonderland. The pristine hill country of the island offers ruins of ancient kingdoms, historic temples, other holy sites and of course the iconic tea plantation responsible for the production of Ceylon tea.
Being the most scenic landscapes of the country, the hill country is situated in the Central province and is naturally a major tourist attraction. The major highlights of the hill country of the island often characterised by tour providers specialising in Sri Lanka tours such as the Connaissance de Ceylan, would be Kandy, Nuweraeliya, Ella.
Kandy being one of the two major cities of the country, is a commercial hub, a recreational paradise and a sacred fortress. It is home to the iconic temple of tooth relic, one of the most important religious sites in the Buddhist world. Kandy is also the capital of the central province and owns a rich cultural heritage often showcased at the renowned Esala Maha Perehara.
Next up is Nuweraeliya. This is a beautiful city covered with emerald tipped mountains and plantations. It was a major hangout spot during the British colonial times due to its mild spring- like weather thus resulting in the colonial architecture and roads distinctively found all over the town. The holy Trinity church is a major attraction in the area. A relaxing boat ride along the Gregory Lake or a simple stroll in the Victoria Park would be a soothing experience. The Haggala botanical gardens is also a major tourist attraction due to stunning, vibrant rose varieties and other distinctive plant varieties and flowers.
Ella is another oasis amid the Sri Lankan hills. It is a small village placed in the central mountains and is only home to a very few guesthouses, hotels and boutique stores. Due to its excellent climate and breathtaking views this is one of the most celebrated hiking spots of the country. Legend has it that Ella was the place where ‘Sita deviya’ was kept hostage by King ‘Ravana.’
