Unawatuna is a beautiful stretch of white sandy beach, 5 kilometers south of Galle, Sri Lanka. A myth around the village circulates that an Indian Prince took shelter on this beautiful coastline after being shipwrecked but was stopped by a certain Goddess. He proved to be victorious and defeated the Goddess and thus inhabited the area now known as Unawatuna. Though there are no Princes or Goddesses in plain sight, this town’s serene beaches are other-worldly. Newly constructed Unawatuna hotels are adding the extra bit of sparkle that the town has to offer; like the boutique resort of CoCo Bay Unawatuna which offers a mesmerizing view of the ocean from its own exclusive beach strip.
Soft sand and pristine beaches are perfect for sunset walks which is a surety of anyone’s visit to the quiet little town. Quite famous for snorkeling and scuba diving, the beaches are safe for swimming as compared to some of its neighboring coastlines. Most visitors of this little patch of heaven claim that the calm blue waters resemble that of the Seychelles or Maldives. Unawatuna’s natural beauty is preserved and is idyllic for a romantic holiday which provides its travellers a great escape from the hustle and bustle of a congested city life.
For travellers who enjoy swimming and exploring; the reef packed with a variety of colourful marine life will ensure that all its guests are treated to some of the best sights of Unawatuna. Jungle Beach which is located 3 kilometres from the town is the ideal spot for snorkeling. It is said to be the home of the most colourful coral, countless shoals of fish and magnificent ship wrecks. The reef stretches up to 40 feet, and the lucky ones would even find themselves swimming with sea turtles!
