With such clear, blue waters surrounding its coasts, it’s no surprise that the island nation of Sri Lanka is famous for amazing beaches. The beach is a necessary experience of all kinds of Sri Lanka tours, whether they be adventurous, a family vacation, solo trip or even a wellness retreat. Some beaches are ideal for specific requirements. For example, Arugam Bay in the island’s East Coast is perfect for surfers, both pros and amateurs alike; as its home to a range of great surf breaks. If you talk to a reputed agent the likes of the Sri Lanka Tailor-made, they will guide you to the beach destination that is most suited to your requirements.
But, let’s say you don’t have any specific need and you just want to experience the best of Sri Lanka’s beaches, there is a beach that is just ideal for anybody and everybody from the kids to the adults and that is the Unawatuna Beach!
Where is it? The charming coastal hamlet of Unawatuna lies about 2 hours away from Colombo, one of the two capital cities of Sri Lanka; where the country’s international airport is located in. You can travel to Unawatuna or “Una” as it is lovingly called; either through the scenic coastal Galle Road or the much quicker Southern Expressway. You can choose to do a one-day trip to Una or you could get a much better experience by staying at one of the many resorts huddled along the beach.
Once you’ve reached Unawatuna here are things that you could try out.
Diving & Snorkelling
Una is famous for its gorgeous coral reefs so trying out diving and snorkelling is a must. A boat ride of about 20-30 minutes will take you to a dive site consisting of a range of ship wrecks including the once-illustrious ‘Rangoon’ a British vessel sunk 100 years ago!
Jungle Beach
One of the most exquisite beaches in Unawatuna and the country overall. Jungle Beach is situated about 4 kilometres away from Una, and you need to trek through a little bit of a forest to get to the beach, hence the name. Its got a really cool reef as well.
