The Uluwatu temple is known to the locals as Pura Luhur Uluwatu which translates roughly to mean a place of divine origin. It is one of the key directional temples in Bali and is located on top of a sheer cliff.
Temple History
The temple is said to have been instigated by Mpu Kunturan; a monk was responsible for establishing many other temples around Bali a 1,000 years ago.
Highlights and Features
There are two entrances to the temple area with split gates decorated in carvings and sculptures. The stones are said to be bio dated back to the 10th century. Additions to the main structure were made in the 16th century.

How to Get There
The Uluwatu temple is just 45 minutes from Kuta if you are travelling by boat. If you are in Uluwatu it will be a short car ride. There are guided tours which are highly recommended especially if you want to learn more about the history and significance.
