The Gulf of Thailand is home to some of the most stunning underwater landscapes. Explore coral reefs and bays rich with marine life, with a guide to the best snorkelling spots on and around Koh Samui.
Best Time To Visit
Located in the lower Gulf region of Thailand, Koh Samui experiences its dry season during the early months of the year, while October through December sees rainy days and monsoon floods. However, the rainy season is fairly short, so most months offer idyllic conditions for snorkelling and other outdoor things to do in Samui, thanks to good visibility and clear skies.
Coral Cove
Situated along the island’s eastern coast, beside resorts like Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort, Coral Cove lives up to its name. Cradled by impressive boulders and tropical greenery, the beach is just steps away from coral-abundant waters. The waves are calm, the beach is quiet, and the cove teems with parrotfish and moray eels—perfect for the avid snorkeller.
Ang Thong Marine Park

Reminiscent of sites like Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, this archipelago of 40+ limestone islands is a crucial marine habitat. Islands like Koh Mae Ko harbour lagoons bursting with vibrant blue hues, while Koh Wao and others boast sea caves adorned with coral gardens. Full-day excursions are available from Koh Samui, which include activities like kayaking and snorkelling.
Koh Tao
Located north of Samui, Koh Tao is considered one of the best snorkelling destinations in the region. Its placid waters are home to endless colourful coral and exotic fish, including the occasional whale shark. Sites like Tanote Bay and Mango Bay are gorgeous both above and below the waves, and are worth visiting despite the challenging trek getting there.
