The Ueno Zoo is the oldest zoo in Japan, located in Taito, Tokyo that is home to over 2600 animals representing over 460 species. The zoo has the most amount of species on exhibition than any other zoo in Japan. The zoo is located only five minutes away from the Ueno Station, providing convenient access from the public transportation network. The grounds on which the Ueno Zoo was built, was the property of the imperial family, but the property was bestowed to the municipal government in the year 1924, along with the Ueno Park on the occasion of the wedding of the crown prince Hirohito. One of the main features of the zoo is that, it provides animals with an environment that is much closer to their natural habitat. Another attraction at the zoo is that, it is also the home to the giant panda and the Sumatran tiger. In addition to the main rare species, the zoo is home to zebras, Red-crowned cranes, White-tailed eagles, king penguins, goats, sheep, pigs, ostriches, red pandas, polar bears and lemurs.
