Ko Tao island was once an uninhabited place that sheltered fishermen from storms, or merely provided a place to rest during the journey home. The island was converted into a prison island in 1933, but the prison was abandoned a little over a decade later. Eventually, people started to settle on the island. The rich soil enabled them to grow coconuts and a multitude of vegetables. In 1980, the first tourists arrived on the Ko Tao. As word of its amazing beaches spread, more and more people visited finally transforming it into one of the most popular island destinations in Thailand. It is now a lively place, mainly due to the advent of tourism.
Most of the roads on Turtle Isle are dirt roads, with the main roads being the only exception. Travelling around can be a bit uncomfortable, but it can be quite rewarding. Ko Tao houses some of the best Thai beaches. These include Chalok Ban Khao, on the south of the island; Sairee Beach, which has bars and a lively nightlife; Mae Haad Beach, which is considered the ‘capital’ of Ko Tao and boasts the most number of shops, restaurants and bars; and Haad Thien (Rocky Bay), which is undoubtedly the best beach here. Haad Thien is surprisingly uncrowded owing to its relative inaccessibility, however, for those who like secluded beaches, the extra time spent travelling is a small price to pay.
Of course Ko Tao is not the only place in Thailand with terrific beaches. Hua Hin is another place known for its excellent beaches. The area does have better infrastructure than Ko Tao, making staying at Hua Hin Hotels a more attractive option. The Anantara Hua Hin Thailand Resort is one of the best Hua Hin Resorts around, and contains all the ingredients to make for a memorable stay.
