They are bejewelled, with shells that glow and patterns that mesmerize. However, it’s saddening to know that the beauty of the turtle is not safe-guarded, rather exploited. Today, Hawksbill Turtles are threatened to the point of extinction. Thankfully there are hearts that melt at the knowledge of these facts. The Turtle Hatchery in Hikkaduwa is owned by a remarkably sensitive family that houses, protects, rehabilitates and liberates a small number of turtles that reach the shores of Southern Sri Lanka. The turtle hatchery is located in close proximity to Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon. It’s undoubtedly the ideal hotel among dozens of other Hikkaduwa hotels that ensures your trip to the hatchery becomes an eventuality.
The walls of the hatchery are unusually colourful. You will notice that cartoonish turtles are pictured swimming amidst multi-hued seaweed. It’s located on the main road and could be spotted with ease. Within the hatchery, massive tanks have been constructed, each tank a home to a separate species of turtle. You will find a small number of Leatherback Turtles, Olive Ridley Turtles, Green Turtles, Loggerhead Turtles and the Hawksbill Turtle swimming in the tanks with ease.
In an enclosed space you will also see mounds of sand which is the birthing ground of the turtles. Hand-written sign posts indicate which turtle is to be expected to surface. It is said that a baby turtle takes 3-7 days to make its grand entrance from the sand that stifles it.
The Turtle Hatchery also has a miniature gallery of the turtles. There is also a gamut of information about the turtles and it is crucial that every visitor learns about the uniqueness and the distinct qualities of each of these beauties.
The hatchery is one that you will encounter while walking to the town. It is definitely a mind-awakening experience.
