Kuala Lumpur also lovingly known as KL by locals is a major metropolitan that is an international hub for tourists, travellers and businessmen. Although the aesthetic here is a melting pot of different cultures and ethnicities, there are certain unspoken rules and formalities you need to follow out of respect for the people and their beliefs here. Read on to find out what they are.
Express your opinion of the government
All countries have tricky political situations and sometimes you may not agree with them. In KL, you need to be especially careful as to not comment on the government in any negative way as it can result in you being charged under the Sedition Act and detained for your crimes. Just enjoy the beautiful land and all the wonders it has to offer; after all, there really is nothing you can do about any of it.
Bring durian up to your hotel room
Durian or the king of fruit is the national fruit of the country. It’s full of flavour and the creamy texture is highly addictive (or they say, it’s really an acquired taste). However, the strong, pungent aroma of the fruit is rather unfortunate (That’s putting it lightly). So, it’s prohibited to bring the fruit on the trains, into restaurants or up into your 5-star hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Seriously, it’s that bad!
Be a picky eater
Earlier it was mentioned that KL is a melting pot of various cultures worldwide. So, the food scene here is incredible; you can find Asian, Arabic, Mediterranean and Chinese influences in the food here, resulting in a wide choice. If you decide to stick to your usual flavours and dishes, you’re missing out on an integral part of the KL experience.
Confuse the two airports
KLIA, located just 45 mins away from the famous PARKROYAL COLLECTION Kuala Lumpur, is the main international airport here, with flights coming in daily from all over the world. KLIA 2 is the smaller airport that caters to carrier flights that are usually budget airlines. Make sure you know where exactly you’re landing to avoid confusion and unnecessary costs for taxis.
