The mighty rock fortress of Sigiriya is imbued with many fascinating attractions and interesting history. Read on to uncover some of the fascinating facts about the eighth wonder of the world!
Where Is It?
Sigiriya is located in the heart of the cultural triangle of Sri Lanka and is less than an hour away from Dambulla. But to beat the crowds and get there early, stay at one of the Sigiriya resorts instead of in a surrounding town, such as the likes of Hotel Sigiriya.
How Was It Formed?
This massive plateau of rock, which towers 200 meters above its surrounding stands out against the thicket and forests. Studies show that this rock was formed by the magma of an extinct volcano! At its summit, it stands at 370 meters above sea level.
Origins of the Name
Sigirya was originally referred to as “Sinha Giri” in Sinhalese, which translates to lion rock. It is believed that this name was derived from the ornate sculpture of a lion which was carved into the façade of this rock. However, only the paws of this carving remain at the foot of the main entrance of the side of the rock.
A Complex City
Sigiriya served as a refuge and a centre of administration for King Kasyapa in the 5th Century, as he was fleeing from his brother Prince Mugalan. It was this king who is accredited for transforming this rock into a flourishing city with the addition of the Mirror Wall and the painting of the Frescos.
