Kandy Perahare, which is also known as ‘Dalada Perahare’ is one of the most vibrant processions not just popular in Sri Lanka, but all around the world. It’s a cultural experience that one should have in their lifetime.
The historical story
The main objective of this procession is to pay the utmost respect for the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha which is kept at Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy. People also believe that this procession invites the God of Rainfall to give rain and prosper their harvests.
The Sacred Relic of Tooth
This Sacred Relic was brought to Sri Lanka by a prince and princess from India in the 4th century. From then until now, this relic survived through many hard times, and locals believe that it protects Sri Lanka from all the evil.
The perahera
The main perahera which happens in July-August every year is a combination of all processions sent by Natha, Vishnu, Katharagama, and Paththini Devalas (shrines) in Kandy. The final perahera is colourful and glamorous with many cultural performances.
