Sri Lanka, also known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean is a country rich in history, culture and beautiful landscapes. Towards the south of the island lies a quiet little town known as Kalutara. One of the more popular reasons tourists’ visit the town of Kalutara is because there’s access to the stunning views and warm waters of the Indian Ocean on one side and a river on the other. History enthusiasts should be sure to check Richmond Castle which was built in 1896. Although there are some rumours of it being haunted, this splendid castle sits in the middle of a 42 acre fruit garden estate complete with well-manicured lawns, statues and water fountains. The two storied mansion was home to a wealthy regional governor of Sri Lanka and the story unfolds to reveal that as the young couple of the mansion were not blessed with children, statues of children were constructed in the front lawn overlooking the balcony. The story ends with the tragic separation of the couple and the heart broken governor writing all his wealth to the Public Trustee.
The entrance to the town of Kalutara is marked by a large pristine white temple. Travellers are often requested to offer some money to the temple for blessings on the journey. The Kalutara Bodiya which is a towering Bodhi tree, the Kalutara Viharaya; a Buddhist temple and a modern Stupa known as Kalutara Chaitya are one of the most worshipped places in Sri Lanka.
