Construction
The fort was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese and was captured by the Dutch in the 17 century and was additionally fortified. It fell under the control of the British in 1649. After gaining independence from the colonisers the archaeological department of Sri Lanka undertook an extensive reconstruction program on the fort and restored the structure to its colonial glory.
Location and getting there
The Galle fort is located in the southwestern coast of Sri Lanka, in the bay of Galle. You can reach the fort from the railway station by taking a tuk-tuk which will only take you around 5 to 10 minutes to reach.
