One of the dynasties of Vietnam, the Tay Son Dynasty features an interesting origin story which began with three brothers who rose to free the people from oppression.
The Backdrop
In the 18th century, Vietnam was ruled by the Le Dynasty. However, during this time, two waring families namely the Nguyen lords in the south and the Trinh lords in the north had the real power. The Nguyen lords were known to be oppressive and the people went through much hardship.
The Beginning
At that time, three brothers from the Tay Son district championed the cause of the people and led an uprising against the Nguyen army. One of the brothers, Nguyen Hue (or Quang Trung), was an exceptional military leader who helped garner significant victories. Those staying at a Quy Nhon hotel including the likes of Anantara Quy Nhon Villas can plan a trip to the Quang Trung Museum which offers more insights into the brothers.
The Victories
The port of Quy Nhon was captured by the Tay Son in 1773 and another major blow came when Gia Dinh, the last stronghold of the Nguyen fell in 1776 to the Tay Son. In 1786, Nguyen Hue also marched against the Trinh lords and subsequently defeated their army as well.
The Legacy
The Tay Son Dynasty is known to have reunited the country after two centuries, while later on it also fought off an attack by the Qing Dynasty of China. Under Nguyen Hue, the country experienced relative prosperity and peace which it had not during the times of the Nguyen and Trinh lords.
