If you’re thinking of vacationing in North Queensland, Australia, and like outdoor activities, one of the attractions you can check out is the Pioneer River. Flowing through Mackay city, the river spans over 75 miles. It’s previous name was Mackay River, which, similar to the town through which it runs, derives its name from one John Mackay who lead an expedition into the Pioneer Valley in the mid nineteenth century, and whose party became the first Europeans to stumble upon the river. If visiting the river is something you want to do during your stay, consider lodging in a hotel in Mackay which is around a half hour or less’s drive away such as Oaks Rivermarque or similar others.
While not all parts of the Pioneer River can be freely accessed, there are a few points at which the river can be reached, and these areas of the river are open to guests at all hours of the day and night. Activities that guests can engage in here include swimming, kayaking and canoeing. Locals living in town are also known to indulge in game fishing on the river with the hopes of getting hard to reel in fish such as barramundi and sooty grunter on their hooks. These two fish varieties are infamous for putting up a tough fight when ensnared, and so provide quite a thrill for experienced anglers. The area near the river also has barbeque and picnic facilities for those interested in enjoying a full day out by the water with friends and family. Animal and bird lovers will be excited to know at a manner of wildlife species can be observed out in the water or on the banks of the river. These include turtles, platypus, swans, pelicans and ducks.
