A remnant of a bygone colonial era, the Old Dutch Fort of Kalpitiya still stands strong as testament to the glory of the days past. Amongst the many Sri Lanka beach resorts scattered around the area, one may seek accommodation in Maalu Maalu Resort & Spa, a highly recommended Sri Lanka resort that exposes its guests to all things beautiful in this region. For the Dutch, Kalpitiya was a strategically important location since this allowed them control over the entrance to the bay, thus leading to the construction of this fort. Once you step inside the main archway, you will be transported in time. The walls rise above 4m encompassing within it a commander’s house, an old Portuguese Jesuit chapel, dungeons and an old army barracks. Although abandoned in the later years, the fort remains in very good condition right to this very day.
