The Thai royal family was famous for its opulent style and extravagant structures. The Royal barges are thus shimmering boats that would definitely attract attention while it glides through the river. According to historic records the barges were used only during processions that went down Chao Phraya River. The procession usually had a fleet of 26 boats, but only a few of these were used for the royal family to travel in. At the National Museum of Royal Barges there is a display of eight of the boats that were used by the royal family. The oldest boat is believed to be over 100 years old.
Like most of the Thai structures the barges are slender vessels that are richly decorated. Metallic paint of various colours has been used on the surface of each boat. The boats are differentiated by the mythological figure that decorates the bow of the boat. The barges are generally 50m in length and need to have an onboard crew of around 60 to row the boat. One of the largest barges that are showcased belonged to the king and was named the Suphannahong.Suphannong means golden swan and was the King’s personal barge. It is made from a single piece of wood which makes it one of the most remarkable woodworks in the world. Some of the Kings items are also on display, the royal footrest and the royal lean pillow are exhibited.
There are some Hindu-Buddhist mythological influences that are present in each of the barges; some of the figures are often what you find in India and in Sri Lanka. Since there is a strong presence of Buddhism in Thailand the barges were also used to mark the end of the Buddhist calendar. A barge ceremony takes place in October and November where the barge transports new robes and provisions for the temples close to the river. If you are planning a visit to Thailand then you should visit the National Museum of Royal Barges, the craftsmanship and the very extent of the boats are sure to amaze you.
