Explore the capital city of Mauritius, Port Louis, and add it to your itinerary when you are travelling to the paradise island. Here are some quick tips to get you on your way.
How to Get There
Port Louis is actually situated on the opposite end of the island from the airport, but because Mauritius is quite small, the journey would take roughly an hour or 45 minutes. If you would like to travel for cheaper, the public bus is available every 30 minutes and costs just $2.3. You can also see what transport or taxi services are offered by your local Minor hotels.
A Brief History
The first settlers in Mauritius came there around the 16th century. It is interesting to note that there was no native population in the country before it was colonised. It was the home of the now extinct Dodo bird as well as many other species that all but died out following human settlement.
Bazaars
There are many bazaars in Port Louis as well as markets, fairs and outdoor shops which sell all kinds of things including unique, handmade, local products.
The Waterfront
The Waterfront is spectacular and is home to some fancy restaurants, cafés, shopping malls and hotel brands.
Flame Trees
If you are in Mauritius during November to January, you will be able to see the flame trees which have flamboyant flame red flowers and no leaves in full bloom.
Triolet
Triolet is the quintessential Mauritian village experience and highly recommended. It is located 11 kilometres from Port Louis.
