Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, is renowned for its bustling beaches and vibrant nightlife, but beyond the well-trodden paths lies a treasure trove of lesser-known gems waiting to be explored. Venture into the island’s quieter corners and discover serene beaches, lush rainforests, and charming local villages that offer a glimpse into the authentic Thai way of life.
The Shrine of Serene Light
The Shrine of the Serene Light, one of Phuket’s oldest Chinese shrines, is subtly nestled in a small courtyard beside The Memory at On On Hotel on Phang Nga Road in Phuket Old Town. Founded in 1891, this shrine showcases its rich heritage through distinctive architectural features typical of Hokkien Chinese shrines.
The Samet Nangshe Viewpoint
The Samet Nangshe Viewpoint is a hidden gem, scarcely known by most expats and visitors in Phuket. Situated atop a steep hill far from the main roads in Phang Nga, it’s about a 30-minute drive from Phuket. The remote location ensures minimal light pollution, allowing for spectacular views of the Milky Way on some nights.
The “original” Big Buddha
Most people visit the white marble Buddha overlooking Chalong from the hills above Kata to see a striking big Buddha statue. However, Wat Khao Rang’s golden Buddha, the island’s original Big Buddha, has faded into obscurity since the completion of the more famous statue in the Nakkerd Hills. If you’re staying in luxury residences in Thailand such as the Layan Residences by Anantara, this spot makes for a great and convenient place to visit.
The Koh Bon Beach
Among the many beautiful islands off Phuket, Koh Bon remains one of the least known due to its minimal development. Far from the usual day-tripper routes, it can be accessed by chartering a long-tail boat from Rawai. After a 15-minute crossing, you’ll discover a simple restaurant, pristine white sands, and little else on this 1.2-kilometer-long island.
