There is archaeological evidence that Lisbon occupies an area which had human inhabitants even in the prehistoric period. It developed as a country state in the early 12th century and has a rich heritage and history.
Tales
As the legend goes, the city was founded and named by Ulysses as Ulissipo or Olissopo, which translates into “Enchanting Port”. It is from that point, as per legend, that Lisbon got its name.
Middle Ages
Lisbon became a major city in the Peninsula during the Roman period and was subsequently called, Felicitas Julia. In the 8th century, the Moors captured it and its older name was used again.
Modern era
The period between the 15th to 18th century is known as the Age of Discovery and the city’s port was the main sailing point of the Portuguese discovery expeditions.
