Planning a holiday to Sri Lanka? It’s a great destination for families, couples and solo adventurers and here are some things you should and shouldn’t do on your trip.
Do Travel Around the Island
There’s much to enjoy so ensure you get the complete experience when deciding on the best places to visit in Sri Lanka. Consider staying at properties of hospitality brands like Araliya Hotels & Resorts in key destinations around the island be it for beachside bliss in Unawatuna, archaeological discoveries in Polonnaruwa or mountain retreats in Nuwara Eliya.
Do Try the Local Cuisine
No trip would be complete without savouring the eclectic flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine. Rice and spicy curries (be it various meats, seafood or veggies) are perennial favourites and isn’t to be missed. Don’t forget to also try kottu roti, a popular street food, as well as egg hoppers and pol (coconut) sambol, while buffalo milk curd and palm treacle make a great dessert!
Don’t Be Disrespectful at Sacred Sites
While there are many temples and other sacred sites to visit in Sri Lanka, do be respectful of the local religions, beliefs and customs. With that in mind, when heading to places like Buddhist temples, wear attire that covers bare legs, midriffs and shoulders. Also, don’t wear clothing or display tattoos with any images of Lord Buddha as well.
Don’t Forget the Sunscreen!
Be it soaking up the sun along sublime shores or exploring cultural or natural sites, chances are you are going to be spending a lot of time outdoors. However, the glorious sunshine can take its toll after prolonged exposure so ensure you bring plenty of effective sunscreen; it helps to also have a good pair of sunglasses and a sunhat or cap too.
