If you’re planning to take temporary residence in Chiang Mai, you should take a complete day off your schedule to go and see Wat Phra That Doi Suthep for gorgeous views and a dazzling temple.
History
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is set like a crown on the top of Doi Suthep mountain. The history draws back as far as 1386 when a shoulder bone of Buddha was said to have been enshrined in the pagoda. The legend says that a white elephant, considered a religious symbol in Thailand climbed the Doi Suthep mountain with the bone and lay there to gently die. It is on that spot the temple stands today.
How to Get There
You can go up to Doi Suthep by driving the 1004 (Huay Kaew road) in the direction of the Chiang Mai zoo which is about an hour’s journey from Anantara Chiang Mai Serviced Suites.
You can also take a songthaew which is like a safari vehicle that leaves from near the zoo. It would cost about 40 baht per person. The songthaew leaves as soon as they have a maximum of 8 to 10 passengers.
You can also to opt for the hike. It is advertised under the sign Nature Walk. This will take you to the base of the mountain and then you can choose to walk up which is 306 steps or you could take the cable car which will cost you 50 THBs if you’re not local.
