When Col. William Light and George Strickland Kingstone came to Australia, they went on to explore the Aussie coastline looking for bigger land areas for colonists to settle in. When they found this gem of a place, they settled here naming the small-town Glenelg after Lord Glenelg. This town is rich in history and there are so many landmarks to see here such as the ones mentioned below.
Glenelg Jetty
This historical pier has seen a lot of changes and destruction over the years. After it was first built in 1859, it was destroyed by the fire that spread from the lighthouse at the end of it in 1873. Again, when Glenelg was hit by a hurricane in 1948 the jetty was again washed away. In 1969 it was rebuilt, stronger than ever.
Pioneer Memorial
This was built to remember the 4 great colonists that came out here. It was completed in 1936 with a replica of the HMS Buffalo sitting atop the structure and the names of the colonists carved at the bottom. The monument sits facing the beautiful beach only a 5min walk from Oaks Glenelg Liberty Suites.
Partridge House
This historical house was built for one Mrs. Elinor Varley in 1899. However, once it was threatened to be demolished it was bought by the former Glenelg Council in 1971 and has been used as a community centre since 1977. You can find many Glenelg holiday accommodation options nearby this wonderful monument.
Glenelg Town Hall
Opened in 1877, the town hall was formerly known as the Glenelg Institute Building. It was designed by esteemed architect and Mayor of Adelaide, Edmund Wright. The grand entrance and western tower allow visitors to view the beautiful panoramic views of the coastline. You can wander through the halls and Bay Discovery Center and learn more about the history of this beautiful city.
